Füchse Berlin with three wins in multi-match week

Two league games, one European Cup game and three wins is Füchse Berlin‘s balance sheet from the last seven days. The capital city’s handball team quickly regained a winning streak after their home European Championships, with a busy schedule, chalking up important wins in the LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga (HBL) league and in their first match of the EHF European League main round.

The first victory came on Thursday (8 February 2024) in a top home game against their immediate rivals, third-placed team SG Flensburg-Handewitt, with a score of 32:31 (18:12). In front of 8,496 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle, Lasse Andersson was the top scorer for the Berlin team with seven goals, and goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev once again shone with 15 saves, ensuring a tight win to round off a tight game. With this win, Füchse have managed to increase their lead over SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the HBL to six points.

Things continue for the Berlin team on Sunday (11 February) with their next HBL game against HSV Hamburg. Following two successful home games after the European Championships, the Berlin team also emerged victorious from their first away game: the capital club beat the Hanseatic team 32:30 (19:15). Lasse Andersson was Füchse’s best shooter in the Sporthalle Hamburg, with nine goals. Once again, Dejan Milosavljev provided strong support to the team under coach Jaron Siewert, with 14 saves. With 36:4 points, Füchse Berlin are still level pegging with SC Magdeburg at the top of the LIQUI MOLY Handball-Bundesliga.

After Magdeburg, things immediately continued for Füchse on Monday with a trip to Romania for an EHF European League away game. With a score of 32:29 (14:15), on Tuesday (13 February) Füchse Berlin beat CSM Constanta by the Black Sea for the first game of the EHF European League main round, fighting back from behind after half-time. In a difficult match, the handball players from Berlin only managed to hit their winning stride after half-time, and were ultimately able to take victory thanks to Milosavljev’s strong goalkeeping. Jerry Tollbring was the best scorer for Füchse with seven goals. The defending champions are increasing their lead in the table, and still have not dropped a point in the European League.

On Saturday (17 February), Füchse Berlin are hosting TBV Lemgo Lippe for a federal league home game in the Max-Schmeling-Halle.

1. FCS Tischtennis still at the top of the table

On Friday evening (9 February 2024), 1. FC Saarbrücken Tischtennis won their home game against TSV Bad Königshofen 3:0 for the fifteenth day of play in the Tischtennis-Bundesliga (TTBL). The team from this spa town has been in impressive form recently: a three-game winning streak has put the Lower Franconians in third place in the federal league table. However, the Saarland players provided their first defeat of the second half of the season: they lost to the current top TTBL team from Saarbrücken 0:3. However, the team under coach Wang Zhi had to work much harder than the result suggests.

Both Darko Jorgic and Eduard Ionescu had to fight their way back from behind before they could put FCS TT in the lead with two wins. Jorgic was 0:2 behind Filip Zeljko and also gained close wins in the third and fourth sets at 13:11 in each. A score of 11:8 in the deciding set ultimately clinched the match. Ionescu similarly ended up 1:2 down against Jin Ueda despite winning the first set, but still managed to take the match following two clear 11:4 victories.

After the break, the Saarbrücken team captain Patrick Franziska had relatively few issues and beat Martin Allegro 3:0. He gained the final point for his team with scores of 11:8, 11:9 and 11:7. This win preserves the Saarland team’s lead over Borussia Düsseldorf in the table.

Things continue for the Saarbrücken players on 28 February, with a Bundesliga away game against Post Mühlhausen.

Carnival joy for SVE after point win in Düsseldorf

On Saturday (10 February 2024), SV Elversberg fought their way to a welcome point with a 1:1 draw in their 2. Bundesliga away game against Fortuna Düsseldorf, spoiling the Rhineland team’s carnival mood with a strong fighting performance.

Following on from the first half, which left the Saarland team just 1:0 down thanks to a fair amount of luck and a few strong saves by goalkeeper Kristof, after half-time SVE proved equal to the promotion hopefuls from the Rhine and earned a point and plenty of self-confidence with their draw in the Merkur-Spiel-Arena. More details in our post-match report.

With 29 points, coach Horst Steffen’s team has consolidated ninth place in Germany’s second highest division. On Sunday (19 February) at 1:30 p.m., SV Elversberg will be facing fellow promoted team VfL Osnabrück in the URSAPHARM arena on Kaiserlinde.

We have once again relaunched our betting game for this home match: you can enter up to two minutes before kick-off. The betting game can be found here.

proWIN Volleys back from Bavaria without any points

On Saturday (10 February 2024), the volleyball players of TV Holz lost 3:1 (25:18 25:21 16:25 25:23) to fourth-placed team TSV Unterhaching in an away game for the 2. Bundesliga Frauen Süd. Like the first leg (3:2), the Holz ladies also lost the second leg in Bavaria to the Haching hares.

After long journeys away, the proWIN Volleys are not really getting into their stride in this season’s away matches. Although the team fought their way back into the match after two sets down to take the third set, ultimately the fourth set was narrowly won (25:23) by the home team. The best player on coach Sergej Danilov’s team was Gina Lehnen. The Volleys currently occupy eleventh place in the table, with fifteen points.

All of the Saarland team’s next three league games will be played at home. With the support of their own fans at the Multifunktionshalle in Saarbrücken, the TV Holz volleyball players will be seeking to gain valuable points for the battle to avoid relegation. On 25 February, the Volleys will be hosting the VC Wiesbaden II team, and then, on 16 and 17 March, teams from Bad Soden and Stuttgart will be coming to Saarbrücken for a home game weekend for the Volleys.

Successful end to Turkey trip for Team BIKE AID

The Tour of Antalya (8 to 11 February 2024) represented the final highlight of Team BIKE AID’s Turkey trip. The professional cycling team from Saarland managed an exceptional start to the season, with seventh place for Anton Schiffer in the overall placings.

As well as intensive training and lots of team building activities, during their nearly two-week stay in Turkey, the newly formed team also managed to gain some initial one-day race successes and ensure the best possible preparation for the tasks ahead.

From 18 to 25 February, Team BIKE AID will be lining up for their first season highlight at the Tour du Rwanda. The Saarland cyclists are completing the lineup of twenty top teams for the 16th edition of Africa’s top cycling event.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
