What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

The #hyloathletes have been very active once again this week. We take a look back at the latest events and competitions in recent days featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

More good news from SVE – the streak continues

With an away win on Sunday (29 October 2023) against 1. FC Magdeburg, SV Elversbergare returning to Saarland with three more points on their ledger and celebrating what is now their seventh undefeated game in a row, putting them in seventh place in the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga (more details in our post-match report).

1. FCS Tischtennis also chalk up another win in a row

After seven wins in a row in the Tischtennis-Bundesliga (TTBL), on Tuesday evening (24 October 2023) 1. FC Saarbrücken Tischtennis also celebrated their debut in the group stage of the new 2023/24 Champions League season with a magnificent 3-0 victory. The reigning Champions League winners from Saarland were represented by the three new additions Eduard Ionescu, Yuto Muramatsu and Cedric Meissner, who won this trust with strong TTBL play. All three were able to put in a convincing performance, conceding just one set in the entire match. With this home win over the Czech team from Havirov, the team under captain Patrick Franziska have taken their first vital step towards the final four. For the first time ever, the knockout round will consist not of home and away games, but rather a final-four tournament, taking place in Saarbrücken’s Saarlandhalle in March 2024 – and, hopefully, with FCS TT. They have already taken their first steps towards it.

Run continues for Füchse Berlin

The capital’s handball team are continuing their undefeated streak. With 30:30 (16:11) against VfL Gummersbach on Friday evening (27 October 2023), the Berlin team also remains the unbeaten leader of the LIQUI MOLY HBL league table after eleven days of play, despite having to handle their first loss of points in this Bundesliga season. In a spectacular game, the players under coach Jaron Siewert were still six goals up in the 49th minute, but then were forced to withstand a strong performance from their Gummersbach hosts, meaning that they could ultimately be very pleased with their fortunate draw. In the last game before the international break and the Super Globe in Saudi Arabia, Mathias Gidsel was Füchse Berlin’s top scorer with eight goals. Their league campaign restarts in just under three weeks, on 19 November, against THW Kiel.

Saarlouis Royals celebrate the end of a losing streak

On Sunday (29 October 2023), the Saarlouis Royals basketball team gained their first win in the fifth day of play for the 1. Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga (DBBL), rectifying their unsuccessful start to the season. The Saarland players won their away game against Gisa Lions MBC in Halle 78:70. Following a very even first half, the team under head coach Ricky Easterling then gained an advantage in the third quarter and were able to hang onto it magnificently right through to the end. On the Saarlouis team, Destiny Littleton shone with 33 points (plus 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 40 efficiency points), Maria Kostourkova gained a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds, 1 steal, 10 efficiency points) and Devon Brookshire scored in the double digits (14 points, 4 rebounds, 15 efficiency points). This Saturday (4 November) sees the Royals being hosted by last-placed league team Göttingen, where they will be hoping to begin a new streak – of wins this time.

TG Saar seeking winning streak through to the final

Since the start of the second half of the season, TG Saar has been striving purposefully for the DTL final. Coach Eugen Spiridonov’s team followed up their opening win against Eintracht Frankfurt with a 36:23 league victory in front of a home crowd on Saturday evening (28 October 2023) against reigning German champions TuS Vinnhorst. This second win in a row for the Saarland team has cemented their fourth place in the league table, which would qualify them for the final tournament to round off the DTL season. Saarland’s top gymnast was Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev with fourteen scorer points, celebrating a comeback and home debut after two years away. However, the young talent from the club’s own training ground have also played a key role in the team’s success. On Saturday, Maxim Kovalenko (6 scorer points) and Daniel Mousichidis (5 scorer points) contributed to the team’s overall success. On 11 November, TG Saar are hosting the gymnasts of TSV Pfuhl in the Kreissporthalle Dillingen, and will be seeking to continue their run (through to the DTL final) in the penultimate competition of the regular league season.

proWIN Volleys gain vital league points

Sunday (29 October 2023) saw the proWIN Volleys coming down to a tiebreak in the deciding fifth set once again in the 2. Volleyball-Bundesliga-Süd, with a home game against second-placed TSV Unterhaching. In a very exciting, evenly matched game, the Holz volleyball team ultimately had to concede defeat 3:2. Both teams dominated at different points (20:25, 25:19, 16:25, 25:17, 12:15), but the Bavarians emerged victorious with better play in the final tiebreak. However, the promoted 2. Liga team chalked up another point on their ledger for the final reckoning in their battle to remain in the league. The game’s MVP was Volleys captain Mira Weber.  The team has the weekend off, before travelling to Wiesbaden for an away game on Sunday 12 November.

Gabriel Clemens narrowly loses to European champion

On Thursday evening (26 October 2023), Saarland darts pro Gabriel Clemens unfortunately lost his opening match at the European Darts Championships in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle. In an exciting, hugely dramatic game against former world champion and current world number 3 Peter Wright, the German Giant ultimately had to admit a close defeat of 5:6. A temporary lead of 4:1 was not enough for the German to clinch the match and celebrate his first European championship win. However, his Scottish opponent excelled with an extremely strong finish and a virtually flawless game at the worst possible time for the Saarland player, leaving him with little chance of progressing. It was little consolation for Clemens that no other tournament player was able to stop the eventual European champion, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, on his route to the title. This week, Gabriel Clemens is back to the darts circus with his next games (nos. 29 & 30) of the Players Championship series in Barnsley, UK. We wish all our HYLO® partners much luck and success in their upcoming events.
