What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

This has been another eventful week for our #hyloathletes with some impressive performances and results. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

Waschi does it again – second world record

Saarland’s extreme and open water swimmer Andreas ‘Waschi’ Waschburger created another historic moment overnight from Sunday into Monday (6-7 October 2024): after his world record in the English Channel last year, Waschi has now also shattered the world record for the Kaiwi Channel (Moloka’i Channel).

The police commissioner from Saarbrücken has swum the Moloka’i Channel in Hawaii in a new world-record time of 9:55:10 hours, despite suffering a broken nose. This beat the previous best time by more than two hours, and saw him ticking off his second (and the longest at 44 km) of the legendary Ocean’s Seven in a world-record time.

We accompanied him on his adventure and reported extensively on it via social media. Follow his journey through the various stages of the Ocean’s Seven on our story page.

SV Elversberg win derby against the Red Devils

On Saturday (5 October 2024), SV Elversberg won the derby against 1. FC Kaiserslautern 1:0. Muhammed Damar scored the decisive goal in the 66th minute, in front of around 9,500 spectators in the URSAPHARMArena. This was the 20-year-old Berlin native’s second goal in a row, after enjoying success in his home city of Berlin a week earlier. Despite a few issues in the first half, SVE were able to dominate the game after half-time and earn a well-deserved win. Read more in our detailed report.

‘We were not tight enough at points during the first half. It got better after half-time, so I would say that the win is still well-deserved’, the coach noted.

Horst Steffen appeared satisfied with his team’s performance, which put them at eighth place in the table with twelve points from eight games. The win was particularly pleasing for Carlo Sickinger, who spent nine years at FCK and now plays for Elversberg.

After the international break, the team’s next opponent will be the promoted team from Münster in an away game on 19 October, when they will be seeking to gain their third win in a row.

Triple medal success for Raguwaran and Nicolai in Sardinia

The World Boccia Challenger took place from 29 September to 7 October 2024 in Olbia in Sardinia. In this high-class competition, Saarland’s two athletes Boris Nicolai and Anita Raguwaran gained outstanding success in both singles and pairs.

Boris Nicolai secured a silver medal in the BC4 men’s singles. ‘I am very satisfied with my performance throughout the tournament’, Nicolai said. Boris also gained another bronze medal in the pairs competition with Nicole Michael. Anita Raguwaran clinched a bronze in the singles after losing to Nicole Michael in the semi-final.

This success marks a well-deserved end to an eventful season, which included competing at the Paralympics. The Saarland athletes returned from Sardinia with four medals and are optimistic about next season.

Anita will initially be taking a break from competition to focus her full attentions on specialist training as a radiologist.

Gabriel Clemens at the Players Championship in Wigan

From 1 to 3 October 2024, Gabriel Clemens competed at the Players Championship tournaments nos. 24, 25 and 26 in Wigan (GB).

On day one, the Saarland darts professional suffered an early defeat when he lost 4:6 to Darren Beveridge in the first round. On day two, Clemens was able to chalk up two wins before losing to Chris Dobey 2:6 in the last sixteen. On day three, Clemens started strong with a 6:2 win over Andy Baetens, but was defeated 2:6 by Connor Scutt in the second round.

Overall, Clemens put in a solid performance with highs and lows and gained valuable experience for his upcoming challenges.

Close race: Tim Hellwig misses out on win in Toulouse

Last Sunday (6 October 2024) saw the fourth stage of the SuperTri series being held in Toulouse, France. The mixed relay Olympic champion Tim Hellwig put in an excellent performance at this prestigious event, consisting of three rounds each with a 300-metre swim, 4-kilometre cycle and 1.6-kilometre run.

Hellwig missed out on the win by just a few metres, narrowly beaten in the final sprint by Portuguese competitor Vasco Vilaca. Both athletes are on the ‘Stars & Stripes’ team. Hellwig finished the race in 48:21 minutes, closely followed by New Zealand athlete Hayden Wilde, who came third in 48:24 minutes.

The ‘Stars & Stripes’ team were delighted with the overall win. Hellwig was generally happy with the outcome and the event: ‘What a show, an amazing venue, French crowds, close racing, that’s why we love triathlon. And what a day for Stars & Stripes with the overall victory, great job team’.

Hellwig is now in third place in the overall SuperTri series rankings with 37 points, behind leader Hayden Wilde (44 points) and Léo Bergere (39 points). The series finale is in early November in Neom, Saudi Arabia, and once again promises huge excitement.

TG Saar celebrate first gymnastics league win

On Saturday evening (5 October 2024), TG Saar gained their first win of the Turn-Bundesliga (DTL) season. In front of a home crowd in Dillingen, the team emerged victorious 31:28 from an exciting competition against TuS Vinnhorst. The result remained up in the air right until the final routine on the horizontal bar.

Coach Eugen Spiridonov’s team began the competition down 3:6 after the floor routines, but the Saarland competitors were able to recover with 8:5 points on the pommel horse. The rings ended with an even score of 5:5, putting things at 15:15 halfway through.

The vault also remained winnerless at 5:5. Vinnhorst took the lead 5:7 on the parallel bars, keeping tensions high right through to the finish. On the horizontal bar, Oleg Verniaiev then secured the crucial four points on his final routine (despite a small error), giving TG Saar the 31:28 victory.

This success puts TG Saar up to fourth place in the table and keeps them in the running for a ticket to the league finals on 7 December in Saarbrücken. The next competition will be an away match against TSV Pfuhl on Saturday (12 October).

BC Bischmisheim celebrate third win of the season

On Saturday, 5 October 2024, 1. BC Saarbrücken-Bischmisheim faced Blau-Weiss Wittorf-NMS for a 1. Badminton Bundesliga away game. In an exciting, evenly-matched game up in the north, BCB secured their third win of the season with a narrow 4:3 victory, preserving their unbeaten streak.

The men’s doubles pairing of Frederik Søgaard and Ruben Jille started strong with a magnificent three-set win. In the women’s doubles, Julie Dawall Jakobsen and Linda Efler had to admit defeat after five hard-fought sets. The second men’s doubles match with Marvin Seidel and Daniel Hess also saw them claim victory in three sets.

proWIN Volleys celebrate first win of the season in away game

On Saturday (5 October 2024), TV Holz’s proWIN Volleys celebrated their first away win and first win of the 2. Damen Volleyball-Bundesliga Süd season in Bavaria. In an exciting game, they defeated the women of TSV Unterhaching 3:1.

Head coach Sergej Danilov’s team began the first set in focused form and were able to clinch it 25:21. Holz’s volleyball players put in another strong performance in the second set, winning 25:19. After a brief slump in the third set, which Unterhaching took 25:13, the proWIN Volleys quickly re-established a foothold in the game and confidently secured the fourth set 25:16.

Holz’s MVP was Alice Turmovich, crowning her starting-six comeback with an impressive performance.

This vital win gives the Saarland players their first three points of the season and has made them optimistic about upcoming games. The team are already looking forward to their next home game at the Sportcampus Saar on Saturday (12 October) at 7 p.m., against the women of Neuseenland-Volleys from Markkleeberg.

Saarlouis Royals lose to Göttingen despite strong start

On Sunday (6 October 2024), Saarlouis Royals had their first away game of the new 1. Damen Basketball-Bundesliga (DBBL) season against Medical Instinct Veilchen BG74 Göttingen. Despite a strong start and a half-time lead of 46:39, the Royals ultimately had to accept an 87:76 defeat.

The Royals began the game in dynamic form and were able to carve out a 20:15 lead in the first quarter. They also initially dominated the second quarter, before Göttingen started regaining ground. After half time, however, the Royals lost ground due to some unnecessary mistakes and the absence of foul-prone Taya Corosdale. Göttingen exploited these weaknesses and took charge in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the Royals fought back but were unable to make up the gap. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas of Göttingen was particularly unstoppable, with 39 points.

The Royals’s next league game is on 13 October at 3 p.m., in the Stadtgartenhalle Saarlouis against Eisvögel USC Freiburg. The draw for the third round of the DBBL Cup has also been announced: the Royals will face GiroLive Panthers Osnabrück at home on 4 December 2024.

On Wednesday (2 October 2024), Füchse Berlin 37:36 narrowly beat FRISCH AUF! Göppingen 37:36 in the Max-Schmeling-Halle to gain entry to the last sixteen of the DHB Cup. Despite having established a comfortable lead, the end was still nail-biting.

Berlin began strong and were leading 20:17 at half time. Mathias Gidsel and Lasse Andersson particularly shone, with ten and seven goals respectively. In the second half, Füchse extended their lead to eight goals, before Göppingen recovered with a turbulent final spurt. Thanks to a crucial save by Lasse Ludwig and support from their fans, Füchse retained their narrow lead through to the final whistle.

Confident away win in WetzlarSouveräner Auswärtssieg in Wetzlar

On Sunday (6 October 2024), a focused performance secured Füchse Berlin a 34:25 win against HSG Wetzlar in the Handball-Bundesliga (HBL). Lasse Andersson was the highest scorer with six goals.
